Out of Joint, the Royal Court Theatre and the Leicester Haymarket present
The Queen and I / Road
by Sue Townsend 1994
The Queen and I by Sue Townsend was presented in repertoire with Road by Jim Cartwright. Out of Joint’s inaugural production paired a revival of Jim Cartwright’s mid-80s classic, with Sue Townsend’s adaptation of her own hilarious novel in which the Royal Family are sent to live on a Leicester council estate.
REVIEWS
‘A right royal romp…the audience cheered to the echo. Wonderous’
-The Daily Mail
‘The Queen and I is a dark joke, a barbed dream of republicanism in which Mrs Elizabeth Windsor and family learn to live in the modern hell of a council estate. It is funny, touching and shrewd’
-Financial Times
‘The Queen and I is wildly runny and Toby Salaman’s wicked impersonation of Prince Charles alone is worth the seat price. With pointed songs by Mickey Gallagher and Ian Dury The Queen and I will become a huge and well-deserved hit.’
-Today
‘These are twin conscience-stricken, state-of-the-nation plays that get [this] new company off to a buoyant start’
-Guardian
